About OSMS
Oconee School of Math and Science (OSMS) is planning to open its doors to students in August of 2010 upon the approval from the Oconee County Board of Education and the State Board of Education. This new charter school will aim to provide top quality education to grades K thru 12 by utilizing research-based programs for Math and Science.

The focus of the school will be on Science and Mathematics however, all other courses will be covered in all grades according to Oconee County School guidelines. The founding School Board of the Oconee Science Academy is now in the process of drafting the charter proposal and input from parents is welcome.

Our Mission

Oconee School of Math and Science (OSMS) will provide a safe learning environment, supported by a diverse community, and a student body that is dedicated to rigorous college preparatory curriculum.

OSMS will provide research-based science, math, and technology education to prepare its students for challenging scientific, technical colleges and careers, to be able to compete in the global economy, and to create scientifically literate leadership potential, by employing rigorous and proven programs.

OSMS is founded by professors affiliated with the University of Georgia, and will feature extensive collaborative programs with the university.

A diverse learning community that recognizes and celebrates all people, increases students' social awareness and prepares them for global economy.

Board Members

Dr. I. Budak Arpinar (Board President)

Dr. Arpinar is an Associate Professor of Computer Science Department at the University of Georgia. His primary research areas are semantic web and web services. His publication record includes more than fifty peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles. He teaches information systems and database management courses at the same department.

Dr. Michelle Garfield Cook

Dr. Cook is an Associate Dean of Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. She is primarily responsible for student academic affairs within the College. Her research interests include African American women's history, anti-slavery movements and methods, and rural African-American post-Civil War communities. She is also a Co-PI for the Peach State LSAMP, a National Science Foundation Grant working with minority students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr. Samir Trabelsi

Dr. Trabelsi is a Lead Scientist at USDA Richard B. Russell Agricultural Research Center and Adjunct Professor of Engineering at UGA. His primary research areas include microwave engineering. He has multidisciplinary background with M.Sc. in Physics and Ph.D. in Electronics. He worked in various research and development areasranging from environment-related problems to microwave sensors and their applications in food and agriculture industries.

Dr. Caner Kazanci

Dr. Kazanci is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Engineering at UGA. His primary research areas include modeling biological and ecological systems, studying system-wide properties of these systems, and working on mathematical and computational solutions to questions of interest. He teaches various courses including mathematical biology and computational engineering.

Ibrahim Demir

Ibrahim Demir is a Research Assistant and persuing a PhD at Environmental Informatics and Control Program, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, UGA. His primary research areas are Environmental Information and Expert Systems. His publication record includes more than fifteen peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles. He is an occasional reviewer for journals in environmental science.
