We currently homeschool our child because we're greatly concerned with the overall poor quality of public education in Georgia, and with the emphasis on standardized testing as the driving force of the curricula in Oconee Co. and all other GA counties. I am very pleased to support this effort to establish a math/science charter school in Oconee Co. because the aims are similar to what we are trying to achieve for our child at home. We would seriously consider placing her in this school rather than continue homeschooling if the Oconee School of Math & Science becomes a reality.
Dear Sirs, I am writing in support of OSMS. I am a professor with the University of Georgia. I currently live in Suwanee, GA in order to be able to enroll my kids in two charter schools. I will seriously consider moving back to the Athens area and living in Oconee County of this charter is approved. I am familiar with the curriculum and the educational philosophy of the proposed charter as they are the also used in the charter school that my son currently attends, namely Fulton science Academy, the best school in Fulton county in science and one of the best in math (according to the 2007 CRCT and Iowa test results published in http://www.fultonschools.org/). I am excited about this opportunity and hope you will approve this charter. Sincerely.
I'd like to congratulate you and your group for the work you are doing in Oconee County with your efforts to establish the math and science charter school. The students of Oconee, already excellent, need to be pushed and encouraged even more if they are to maintain their top honors in statewide.
I think it would be great to have a school that focuses more on science and math. With today's technology constantly changing it will be a real benefit for students to have a firm foundation in the basics. I also think that this sort of school will raise the standards of the quality of education in Oconee County.
I am a life long resident of Oconee County and a 1986 graduate of OCHS. I have 3 children ages 21, 17 and 12. My youngest son is now in the 6th grade at OCMS. I am pleased with his progress but would like for him to have more opportunities and more challenges. He loves science and is very good at math. He is fascinated by technology and computers! I think this would be a wonderful environment for him.
I would be very interested in sending my son to OSMS. He is very interested in science and math but tends to get bored often and doesn't seem to be challenged. I would love for him to have more challenges and a more stimulating environment.
My son is 5 and has been reading since he was 3. He reads at an advanced level (grade 4) and is only in preschool. We had him tested by an educational psychologist because we were amazed at his academic abilities and his inquisitiveness at an early age. We wanted to make sure we weren't just "proud" parents who thought their child was incredibly bright. His results put him in "highly superior" categories for academic and achievement areas. We have been searching for alternative education for him as we aren't sure a "traditional" school will be the right fit for him. He is currently enrolled to start Kindergarten in the public school system, but OCMS sounds like a great alternative. He already does science activities and projects made for kids in grades 3 and higher.
My husband is an administrator and I am a former English/literature teacher of 10 years. We are both very interested in this project. Please keep us posted about the progress. We are very interested in seeing this project succeed! The schools and teachers in this county are outstanding. We would like, however, to see this specialized school available for our children.
The OSMS will be an important step towards ensuring Oconee County children are competitive with their peers in the rest of the world in the areas of math and science. We fully support the establishment of this school and will work to ensure its success.
We believe the Oconee Math and Science Academy is a great opportunity for our school system to provide the community with yet another avenue for excellence. We have been pleased with the general education our children are receiving, however, some children could excel in a more rigorous environment. Making a math and science focused curriculum available to those students and parents seeking it would no doubt enhance many children's educational experience. It also aligns with the Georgia DOE's current focus on increasing math and science instruction as laid out at the January middle school parent meeting by the state math coordinator. We have followed the Fulton Science Academy's trajectory for years and are thrilled at the possibility a similar school will open here.
I've just learned of this development. I want to express my considerable interest in this! I need to find out much more, but I can see wonderful consequences in such an outstanding system as OCS establishing a high quality mathematics and science charter school.
Given that Oconee County routinely looses teachers due to retirement issues (thus some of the best leave later in their career) and the slowness of the public curriculum to adapt to teaching methods especially in middle school, this would be a great option for Oconee County or any county for that matter.
